About James Dougherty

James Dougherty My Photography: I'm passionate about beauty in the built environment and the sublime works that architects are capable of. I seek to capture architectural compositions that express the best of human nature. I'm particularly fond of architecture that provides sculptural gifts to passersby - details and forms that come to life under the light of the sun to create elegantly composed highlights, half tones and shadow shapes. My Day Job: As a Principal and Director of Design at Dover, Kohl & Partners, a town planning design firm in the United States, www.doverkohl.com, I've dedicated my career to helping communities envision and implement a more walkable, sustainable future. I began working with Dover-Kohl in 1996 and have since participated in over 140 design and form-based coding charrettes in the United States and abroad. I work closely with the firm’s other Principals, Project Directors and Urban Designers to establish the design direction of each of the office’s projects. I participate in all aspects of the office's work, including public involvement, development of master plans, regulating plans and form-based codes. I also specialize in the creation of many of the company's three-dimensional illustrations, using a blend of hand-drawn and computer techniques. My graphics and visualizations illustrating sustainable urban design and form-based code principles have been published in over a dozen books, including Retrofitting Suburbia by Ellen Dunham-Jones and June Williamson, Form Based Codes by Daniel and Karen Parolek and Paul Crawford, and The Charrette Handbook by the National Charrette Institute. I was educated at Hampton University (Bachelor of Architecture) and the University of Miami (Master of Architecture - Town & Suburb Design Program). I holds AICP certification from the American Planning Association. I was honored to receive the 2012 Charles A. Barrett Award for Continued Excellence in Urban Design from the Florida Congress for the New Urbanism. This prestigious honor, awarded every two years, "is established to recognize an individual with exemplary talents in traditional architectural and urban design".
